The pros and cons of alternative power solutions with LookSee’s Marc du Plessis
LookSee Executive Head Marc du Plessis helps customers weigh up the pros and cons of various alternative energy solutions as South Africans look for ways to overcome the energy crisis.
In the face of load shedding, many South Africans are deciding whether to invest in alternative power sources such as generators and other backup power systems, or to harness the power of the sun with solar power installations.
Marc du Plessis, Executive Head of the LookSee.co.za, Standard Bank's home services, weighed the pros and cons of each option in a series of interviews.
As Du Plessis explains, while generators offer immediate value for money with a lower upfront cost, running costs can eventually become a heavy burden thanks to high fuel prices.
Another solution is backup power via batteries and inverters, which demand a larger upfront cost and emphasis on reliable equipment and installation, but offer long-term benefits such as lower running and maintenance costs, and typically longer warranties resulting in larger returns on the initial investment.
Meanwhile, those looking to invest in and have a solar power system installed on their property stand to benefit in several ways. According to Du Plessis, solar systems are a producing asset, generating energy by the kilowatt hour with every kilowatt worth an amount of money. Solar power systems can also serve as a backup solution in the event of power outages or enable South Africans to go completely off-grid.
Upfront costs for solar remain high, but financial services providers are starting to offer tailor-made products that enable South Africans to invest in solar power systems in an affordable and financially sustainable way. This includes LookSee’s new Solar Loan, which caps interest rates on loans at a maximum of prime plus 2.5%. Combined with tax rebates, where individuals can claim up to R15 000 on the cost of solar panels, this makes going solar more affordable than ever.
