1. What is Disability Cover?
It’s a long-term insurance product that pays you a lump sum if you become permanently disabled due to illness or injury.
2. Why do I need it?
You need to ask yourself if you could support yourself and your dependents financially if you became disabled. Disability Cover gives you a once-off pay-out when you become permanently disabled. You can use the money as you please (pay off your bond or car, buy a mobility scooter or pay for medical treatments and procedures).
3. How do we define constitutes a ‘permanent disability’?
Standard Bank’s direct life insurance services define ‘permanent disability’ as an illness or injury that permanently prevents you from working or leaves you incapacitated.
4. How much cover can I qualify for?
Our Disability Cover gives you a tax-free pay-out of R200 000 to R5 000 000. We’ll conduct a simple risk assessment (including underwriting) to determine if you qualify to get cover, the amount you qualify for, and your monthly premiums.
5. How long are you covered?
You are covered for as long as you pay your monthly premiums. Your cover ends when you: Make a claim and get your lump sum,
- Turn 65 years old, or
- You pass away.
6. Do you need to undergo a full medical check-up?
No, you don’t have to undergo any medical check-up. However, you’re required to take an HIV test within the first 90 days of your policy start date. We’ll arrange for our Nurses on Wheels service to come to your workplace or home to conduct the test (at no cost to you).
7. What isn’t covered in your policy?
You will not be covered for the following:
- Any exclusions stipulated on your policy,
- If you intentionally harm yourself,
- You get injured while breaking the law, or
- You put yourself in a position where you’re exposed to war or similar activities.
- If you do not take an HIV test within 90 days of your cover start date or your test result is reactive, your cover will be limited to disability cover due to injury only.
